Officio Birthday Star: Bobby Brown
Robert Barisford Brown (born February 5, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer and actor. Brown, alongside frequent collaborator Teddy Riley, is noted as a pioneer of new jack swing: a fusion of hip hop and R&B. Brown started his career in the R&B and pop group New Edition, from its inception in 1981 until his exit from the group in December 1985.
During the group's first experience with fame in 1983, its members were Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant. Johnny Gill joined the group in 1987 to add continued success after Brown's departure in 1985. Early hits included "Candy Girl," (UK #1),"Cool It Now," (US #4) and "Mr. Telephone Man". Tresvant was the lead singer on most of the songs. Their last studio album was 2004's One Love, their seventh overall. Their 1996 album Home Again (6th set) was their highest charting peaking at number-one both in the US and Canada, while their self-titled second set released in 1984 was their first record to peak in the US top-ten, reaching No.6. On June 28, 2016, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Walk of Famer Vin Di Bona announced New Edition's induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of Recording.
Starting a solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with his second album Don't Be Cruel (1988) which spawned five Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles including the number one hit "My Prerogative", and the Grammy Award-winning "Every Little Step". In February 1990 he won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the album's fourth single "Every Little Step". In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Ghostbusters II.
In 1992, Brown married singer Whitney Houston, with whom he had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug abuse and domestic disputes made them tabloid fodder.
Brown's next album Bobby (1992) spawned several hit singles including "Humpin' Around", "Get Away", and "Good Enough". However, sales of Bobby did not match its predecessor. The album peaked at No.2 on the US Billboard 200, marking the singer's second top-ten charting album therein and final one to chart in the top-40 on the list as the next studio album, Forever (1997) only peaked as high as #61. His 1989 compilation record Dance!...Ya Know It! managed to peak at No.9 on the US charts.
The discography American R&B singer-songwriter, rapper and dancer Bobby Brown consists of five studio albums, six compilation/remix albums and 24 singles.
In 1990, Brown was featured on Glenn Medeiros' single "She Ain't Worth It" which peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking Brown's second number-one and last one to date, while the only one for Medeirs.
