Tones And I's 'Dance Monkey' Breaks Australian Chart Record
Another week, another record.
Tones And I’s global hit “Dance Monkey” (Bad Batch Records/ Sony Music Entertainment Australia) bags a 10th consecutive week atop Australia’s singles chart, setting a new, all-time mark among homegrown artists.
It’s been a remarkable ride for Tones, who just a year ago was busking in Byron Bay, a popular beach spot in northern New South Wales.
Her triple-platinum certified “Dance Monkey” is now No. 1 in 13 countries, including the U.K., where it climbs 7-1 for its first stint at the top, with upwards of 5.1 million streams and 50,000 chart sales this week alone.
To date, the tune has raked in more than 250 million streams globally, with 175 million of those this month.
Just the second single by the singer and songwriter, “Dance Monkey” smashes the previous streak set by Sydney collective Justice Crew, whose “Que Sera” logged nine weeks at No. 1 in 2014.
During her long reign at the top, the Melbourne-raised, Byron Bay-based muso beat the 32-year ARIA record for most weeks at the summit by an Australian female solo artist, previously held by Kylie Minogue’s 1987 hit "Locomotion" (at seven weeks).
Tones And I’s very own monster hit is the first No. 1 by an Aussie act on the national chart this year. Tones (real name Toni Watson) also appears on the ARIA Charts this week with her debut single “Johnny Run Away” (No. 36, double-platinum) and the followup to “Dance Monkey”, “Never Seen The Rain” (No. 23, platinum), while her debut EP The Kids Are Coming is down one place on the ARIA Albums Chart at No. 6.
